ORGANS IN EDMONTON

University of Alberta, Convocation Hall

The 1978 Casavant Memorial Organ (Casavant Frères Opus 3358) is the first and largest mechanical action organ of its kind in western Canada. It was designed with input from Gerhard Krapf, then Professor of Organ at the University of Alberta, during Gerhard Brunzema’s tenure as Casavant’s artistic director and installed in the university’s Convocation Hall in 1978 when the building was renovated. The instrument is the latest incarnation of a century-old organ originally dedicated in 1925 as a war memorial in honour of the faculty and students who lost their lives in World War I.
